Hammond’s Car of the Year TG Awards - Richard Hammond celebrated his first day of filming for the new series of Top Gear by attending the TG Cars of the Year Awards last Thursday. On his first night out since his jet car accident in September, Richard was accompanied by co-presenters James May and Jeremy Clarkson, who confirmed that the first episode of the new series is due to air on January 28 at 8pm on BBC2. Lego's Andy Woodman presented Richard with a scale model of the infamous Vampire jet car and a Lego version of the Top Gear studio set, complete with presenters and, of course, a tiny Stig. This followed Richard's recent announcement that playing with Lego blocks had aided his swift recovery. Richard was also crowned one of Top Gear magazine's Men of the Year at the awards ceremony, which saw Jeremy and TG magazine editor Michael Harvey handing out the BAFTA-inspired gongs to the Cars of the Year category winners.

The Awards issue of TopGear magazine, Britain's best-selling car title, hits the newsstands today, with Citroen claiming top spot for the first time in the contest's 11-year history. This is it, my undoubted star of 2010 - the Porsche 911 GT2 RS: insane, blindingly fast, flamboyant and it goes against everything I've ever said about the 911. Which makes me look a bit of a monkey.

Subaru Impreza WRX STI Special Edition - The 2012 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Special Edition adopts some chassis components from the Japan-market spec-C model. The STI Special Edition will go on sale in the price of 2010 for $32,995 ($2,000 less than the standard version). The Special Edition WRX STI will be about as close as the American market will get to a Spec C from the Japanese automaker as it will also ride on the JDM version’s charcoal colored 18 inch wheels.

A while back we had the chance to speak with some of Subaru of America’s representatives and they ensured us that they had seen the errors of their ways when they numbed down the STI into its hatchback only form, but they also promised us that they were going to take steps to make up for it. However if this is any indication of their intentions it is clear that Subaru is skipping the baby steps and taking some pretty significant leaps to return the STI to its performance oriented rally bred heritage.

Performance purists will not be overlooked by Subaru at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show as the Japanese automaker introduces the 2010 Impreza WRX STI Special Edition. Subaru said the special model is bound for showrooms in early spring with an initial limited run of 125 units.

First drive New Evoque Review

First drive New Evoque Review - The 2012 Evoque and Price offers the usual Range Rover comforts but with extra sportiness thrown in. The Evoque is the smallest, lightest (under 1600kg in certain guises) and most aerodynamic (Cd 0.35) Land Rover in history. It is derived from the Freelander, but with some serious modifications. All of its major suspension parts (MacPherson struts front, multilink rear) have been redesigned for lightness and better geometry; it is the first SUV anywhere to use MagneRide adaptive dampers; and it sets new standards for traction and chassis stability electronics.

This has been like some ridiculously drawn-out teenage tease. The first glimpse of the Evoque was July last year. It has been breathlessly revealing more of itself since then. Now, finally, there's been the first hurried physical contact behind the bike sheds. I got a drive of it.

As I say, though, it was just a quick furtle. The tease goes on for an agonisingly long time yet, as showroom cars won't be launched until summer. This wasn't a road test, but a short drive of prototypes on a test track.

We drove a prototype of the Euro-market Jetta 2.0 TSI, which is identical to the forthcoming GLI except for its cosmetics.

As in its other applications, the turbocharged 2.0 serves up 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque, the latter from 1700 to 5000 rpm. Turbo lag is kept to a minimum, and there is instant throttle response throughout the power band. The TSI engine produces a muted snarl that should become far more prominent in production cars than in the preproduction model we drove, thanks to a sound generator that will spice up the soundtrack.

But it happened. My dream for the car was that it would make a lot of money for a guy street racing. It should be a car that winds up on YouTube doing something illegal. I’ve been waiting 20-plus years to launch a car like this.”

The 2012 Boss 302 couldn’t be less like the original - today’s UPS trucks come with more creature comforts than most track-oriented muscle cars from the late 1960s. The new Boss models receive an Alcantara-covered steering wheel, dark metallic dash and door panels, a black shift knob, and cloth seats with “suede-like” center inserts. The GT500’s Recaro front bucket seats are optional. Eleven pounds of sound-deadening material are missing, to allow more of the engine’s uniquely tuned exhaust sound to fill the cabin.

The reaction was similar when media frenzy developed a few weeks later after a San Diego man claimed his 2008 Prius sped out of control on California’s Interstate 8. As cooler heads prevailed, the consensus was that “unintended acceleration” was driver error, not a defect.

Back in the waning years of the previous millennium, the Toyota Prius was born, becoming the first Toyota hybrid. Since then, of course, many other Toyota and Lexus hybrids have hit the roads, as have many from nearly every other automaker. But it’s the Prius—thanks to distinct (if unsexy) styling and industry-leading fuel economy—that remains the unofficial greenmobile for Toyota and the world.

Naturally, then, the Prius is set to become the first Toyota to make the next big leap in fuel efficiency for 2012 by going plug-in with the new Prius PHV, or “plug-in hybrid vehicle.” And since 2012 is a long way off—in our impatient minds, at least—we jumped at the chance to drive one of the 150 powder-blue preproduction Prius PHVs bound for the U.S. in 2010. All are part of Toyota’s Prius PHV pilot program that places these vehicles with various utilities and government agencies to gather data on vehicle performance.

UK’s Autocar website reported yesterday that Jim Lentz, president of Toyota Motors Sales, confirmed development of a hybrid gas-electric version of the company’s RAV4 crossover SUV. Lentz added that Toyota’s 1.8-liter hybrid system will become the company’s “core powertrain.”

The RAV4 Hybrid is due in spring 2012, but only the five-door model will get the hybrid option.

HybridCars.com reported last April that the RAV4 Hybrid was in the works. The Toyota Highlander has an EPA rating of 27 in the city and 25 on the highway. As a smaller vehicle, the RAV4 Hybrid could exceed 30 miles per gallon—possibly becoming the most fuel-efficient SUV on the market. Currently, the Ford Escape Hybrid, 34 highway / 31 city, has that distinction. Hybrid fans have been hoping for a gas-electric RAV4 for several years.

Toyota may not be so generous by time the 2012 Sienna rolls out.

Akio Toyoda took control of Toyota as President. He almost immediately claimed to drop his predecessor’s 2002 plan to have 15% of world market share — up from 11% in 2002 — and said that Toyota would change its priorities to focus on high-quality, affordable cars. Toyota’s current global capacity is ten million vehicles per year, but the company said it plans to drop its capacity (though it has not). Akio Toyoda said that rapid growth had strained Toyota’s resources and resulted in overcapacity. On the other hand, when Toyota sales slowed, he immediately restored rapid growth by slapping large rebates onto Toyota hoods, so it's hard to know how seriously to take these statements.
